“…but I focus on this one thing: forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on…” Philippians 3:13-14
Did you know the second Friday in January is an “official day?” It’s called Quitter’s Day. I’m sure you guessed why: research shows that although many people set New Year’s Resolutions, most abandon them by the second Friday in January every year.
Setting resolutions isn’t a new concept. It dates back at least 4,000 years to the time of the babylonians. Most of our resolutions today fall into health and fitness categories; things like weight loss, exercise, or nutrition. Of course, faithfulness in these areas can yield significant change in your life.
But there’s one area of resolution making where you really should remain steadfast: your spiritual life. So, as we step into a new year, let’s take a few minutes to focus on the key biblical principle of faithfulness.
Paul, in his letter to the Philippians, emphasizes the importance of not growing weary in well doing. In chapter three, he writes about pressing on toward spiritual maturity and faithfulness in Christ, reminding us that those who refuse to give up will indeed reap a harvest. You might say, “Sure, that sounds great. So what?”
Well, I think this also serves as a lesson that faithfulness is really the bedrock of obedience and even our ability to overcome trials. Looking to other biblical figures, such as Abraham and Joseph, you’ll be encouraged that you can remain faithful since this is a key aspect of a life well-lived for God.
Remember though, faithfulness in your spiritual growth is an ongoing process that requires continued effort and, well, faithfulness! If you need a word for today or even better, a word for 2025, I have a suggestion for you: FAITHFUL.
